santa analysis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.astro.umd.edu/~avondale/extra/Humor/ChristmasHumor/SantaAnalysis.html

IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS?

As a result of an overwhelming lack of requests, and with research help from that renowned scientific journal SPY magazine (January, 1990) - I am pleased to present the annual scientific inquiry into Santa Claus.

No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seemes logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a pokey 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal anount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enourmous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

1000 sheets for A thousand sheets... again!

Today is a very special day here at the A thousand sheets of paper blog. :)

Remember last year when I kept track of how many different sheets of paper I cut into as I crafted, then celebrated reaching 1000 sheets along with my blog-o-versary with some super special candy? Well... I did it again and this year not only did I miss my July 16th blog-o-versary date, it also took me a couple weeks longer to reach the 1000 sheet milestone. What can I say? I must have been playing more with scraps. ;)

But we are here now and I am so excited to share my paper crafting craziness with all of you for a second year in a row, LOL!

Because I'm in the mood to celebrate (and clear out some paper) I've got A THOUSAND 6x6 sheets of paper that I'm giving away! Wanna see what 1000 sheets of paper looks like? Take a look-see...

That's a lot of paper, huh? Perhaps just a bit much to send all to one person, so I'm breaking it apart into five candies of 200 sheets each. And the fun doesn't stop there! I couldn't celebrate another wonderful, exciting, fantabulous and simply amazing year of stamping and blogging without throwing some stamps into the mix as well! So I have collected stamps from some of my most favorite companies into one MEGA CANDY!

Wanna know what all is included? There is:

Tickled Pink Lil Steampunk Lilith and others

Kraftin Kimmie Clarabelle, sentiments and others

The Emerald Fairies Larakins

Some Odd Girl Balloon Kaylee and Mooey

My Favorite Things Pure Innocence Book in Hand

The Craft's Meow Frieda stamps

Stamping Bella Arthur and Annie

Unity/Bella Blvd house

The Greeting Farm Wild Sprouts that I designed (Stella, Ruby, Chelsea and Gigi)

CC Designs Birthday Gretel

and a Sweet November stamp from each release of this past year (Raspberry Flitter Friend, Briar and Sonata, Princess Isadora, Splash and Wave, Penelope and Juniper, Gemini, Darby and Dazzle, Milk and Cookies Christmas boy, Neva snowflake fairy, Fairwee Josie, jar and sentiments)

Wondering what you need to do for a chance to win all of these plus some yummy paper? Well, because this is pretty big and I'm pretty excited about it, I really want to spread the word sooooo... in order to be eligible to win the grand prize you have to post about the 1000 sheets blog candy on your own blog (feel free to right click and use the paper photo above), linking directly back to this post. Once you've done that, just leave a comment here and you will be entered... easy peasy! Like always, I will ship anywhere so all are welcome to play! :)

I will leave this candy open through Friday, September 23rd then random generator will pick a winner and I will announce on Saturday, September 24th. Don't have a blog? Not to worry, there is still a chance to win a little somethin' somethin', check it out... one random commenter (blog or not) will win 200 6x6 sheets of paper and Sweet November Fairwee Emaline.

One random commenter (blog or not) will win 200 6x6 sheets of paper and Sweet November Blackberry Flitter Friend.

One random commenter (blog or not) will win 200 6x6 sheets of paper and Sweet November Princess Ilyse.

And finally one random commenter (blog or not) will win 200 sheets of paper and Sweet November and Sandy Breakwater with Mama Crabby.

Whew! That's it, that's all I've got, except for a big giant... THANK YOU soooooo much for joining me on a second year of blogging and crafting fun! You all truly delight and inspire me each and every day and I LOVE being a part of that creative exchange... stampers ROCK!

Big hugs and smooches to you all and good luck! :)

So what you waiting for go visit this blog today, not just for the candy but to also see some absolutely stunning cards.

PLEASE WILL YOU HELP?

http://mycardmakinghaven.blogspot.com/2011/08/please-help.html

Help needed until the 10th september

Hi all, this post is to ask for HELP,a friend Lyndall is battling cancer.........and it does not look good at this stage(she has been given 3 years at most),but is getting a second opinion.Lyndall is not going to give up without a fight and so I am asking for help.It might be making her a card(to cheer her up), Click link above for more details.....

Here is an email giving a little information what lyndall has been through

A benefit night will be held for Lyndall on the 10th September 2011,click http://www.ctccommunications.com.au/lyndall-currie-benefit-night.html  this link for more details

the email..........

Lyndall is the most incredible and inspiring person I have ever met.

She fought and won her battle with Cancer Ewing’s Sarcoma in her late teens, this battle meant she had to have her finger amputated to totally beat it. Heart breaking as it was. She soldiered on.

This battle took a toll on her, but her can do attitude got her through. Years passed and the cancer lay dormant and what we thought was totally gone.

But this year the rare cancer she had in her late teens manifested its ugly head yet again. This time it came back as a tumour resting on her heart.

For the past 4 months she has undergoing extensive Chemotherapy to try and eradicate it. With baited breathe we have prayed and prayed for yet another recovery. But this time we are not as lucky. Her specialist is of the belief that the tumour is not going to shrink away totally from the chemo and radiotherapy and it remains inoperable. This means that it will most likely start to grow again and may start to spread.

If I can quote from Lyndall during her battle she has said to her family and friends "Believe you me, long before Lorna Jane put it on a t-shirt my mantra has been "Never Give UP!!"We would like to organise a Benefit Night for Lyndall to help her and her family with their financial struggles.

NOTE : WOW,I would just like to say a big thankyou to those that have responded to this post and emailed me with offers of support.I am so overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people,we have had crafters want to make cards for Lyndall, send extra cards to sell, card making kits,a pearl and crystal necklace to sell, offers of digi images some to sell and another pack to raffle off and craft packs for raffling. We are also going to sell some cards(as suggested by some crafters) and the money raised will go to Lyndall,so if you have any spare cards and want to donate them please email me at chezzy31@gmail.com for the address. If you want to help in anyway please email me,this is easier for me as I would have ready access to your email address.Thankyou.

So please click on the link and read the full story. And if you can help by sending a card, donating a dollar or a pound, buying a raffle ticket or other ways please read more by clicking the above links. There are also some cute digi images for sale.

Thank you for reading this post

Stamping Fundraiser

                             Stamping Fundraiser

Kim Sherrod is hosting a fundraiser to help out a friend of hers. Below I have copied the wording directly from her blog explaining the fundraiser.

This is a fundraiser to help my friend out at this time to help her with expenses so she can see her son. He has a heart problem and it's costly for the trip and it's financially difficult for her to travel. Help us to make it possible for her to spend some time with him. She doesn't think he's going to make it and anything will help to ease her burden during this difficult time.

We are so grateful to Ann V. of Raindrop Echo Designs for designing these beautiful stamps to help us with our fundraiser. We are offering these stamps in both digi and clear stamps. We will send you the digi stamps within 24 hours.

The clear stamps are a pre-order item. We have to meet a minimum in order to place the clear stamp order. The minimum is very minimal. The clear stamps are a wonderful quality and we've worked with the stamp manufacturer before.

Your file will come in jpeg and png files.

the images  are available either as clear stamps or as digital stamps
Thank you for your support :-)

To order these images or to find out more information on the fundraiser please stop by Kim Sherrod’s blog

About Card Cupids

About Card Cupids

Mission:

Card Cupids mission is to provide encouragement and joy by sending cards and goodies such as stuffed animals, coloring books and art supplies to children who are facing difficult challenges in their young lives regardless of their economic background.

How It Works:

This organization is designed to collect and send a bundle of cards with words of encouragement to needy children for their birthday or in a time of need along with a cuddly stuffed animal. We will help to make sure that each needy child’s birthday is celebrated and that children in the hospital receive well wishes. A child can be referred by a friend, family member, teacher, social worker or other agency. Cards will be collected and then sent with a stuffed animal to brighten their day.

How You Can Help:

Nominate a child that you believe would benefit from one of our Card Cupid Card Care Package.

Send in a handmade card to be sent to one of our card cupid recipients. (Please refer to the detailed requirements under the card makers section.)

Make a purchase from the Etsy for Card Cupids to help pay for shipping.

The Story Behind Card Cupids:

When Stephanie, the founder of Card Cupids’ mother was hit by an 18 wheeler in 2005, her mom spent over 5 and a half months in the hospital. She remembered visiting her in the hospital and being completely amazed and touched at how many people sent her cards, from family to friends to business acquaintances and people she did not even know. Each and every card she received empowered her towards her recovery in a way that the many operations and physical therapy could not. To this day, when she thinks back to that life changing accident, she continues to recall the power of the cards she received and will forever be grateful.

Stephanie grew up in a household that had a huge emphasis of sharing and caring for others, even those we did not know. Her parents and grandparents encouraged and inspired her to get involved in after school activities that gave back to our community, especially those in need. This was a lifelong virtue that she carried with her even in adulthood. Over a year ago, when she began brainstorming on ways she could help children in need, she remembered that some of the most empowering acts of kindness can be as simple as sending a card and out of this came Card Cupids.

Card Cupids is an Incorporated Non Stock Corporation in Virginia as of November 2010. Card Cupids will be seeking 501c3 status in 2012.
